When Ties Are Cut, Barakah Is Cut Too

Shaykh Bali says — Allah joins ties with the one who keeps the ties of kinship joined; and whoever cuts them, Allah cuts ties with him.

Shaykh Bali says — Allah joins ties with the one who keeps the ties of kinship joined; and whoever cuts them, Allah cuts ties with him.

A Case That Came to the Shaykh

Someone called from Cairo. He has a restaurant, and its income has dropped suddenly, falling and falling until it hit rock bottom. He thinks the evil eye or hasad has struck him.

The Shaykh asked — Which relatives do you have? He said he has a maternal aunt. How often do you visit her? The answer — twice a year, on Eid.

The Shaykh said — Go once a week, with a small packet of sweets in your hand. Do this for a month, then call me.

The call came after just three weeks. The aunt had been filled with joy every time, and the income from the business had started to rise again.

The Shaykh's Answer

When Allah joins ties, it means — He joins them with provision, barakah, knowledge, love in marriage, obedience from children, and good health.

And cutting ties means barakah stops, goodness stops, and tawfiq stops. The Shaykh says — cutting the ties of kinship is a major sin; the scholars have counted it in the very list of major sins.

Relationships break for a few familiar reasons — arrogance toward relatives after gaining position or money, the pressure of excessive hospitality when visiting, partnership businesses without a written contract, and withholding inheritance.

Evidence — The Right of Close Relatives

Worship Allāh and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good, and to relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the neighbor farther away, the companion at your side, the traveler, and those whom your right hands possess. Indeed, Allāh does not like those who are self-deluding and boastful, (Surah An-Nisaa 4:36 — Saheeh International; meaning of the complete verse)

The Prophet ﷺ said — When Allah created the womb, it said: This is the place of one who seeks Your refuge from being cut off. Allah said — I will join whoever joins you, and I will cut off whoever cuts you. (Sahih Muslim 2554)

What to Do

  1. Make a list on your phone called ‘Rahim’ — all your relatives' numbers in one place.
  2. Call a few people every week to ask after them; when you get the chance, take a small hadiya with you.
  3. If you do business with a relative, not on a verbal word — put a written contract in place from the start.
  4. Do not withhold inheritance; and do not take on the pressure of excessive arrangements in hospitality.
