Want to quit? Take a pen and paper
Shaykh Wahid Abdus Salam Bali did not stop at saying "haram" — he handed us a step-by-step list for quitting.

Shaykh Wahid Abdus Salam Bali did not stop at saying "haram" — he handed us a step-by-step list for quitting.
Where It Begins
A father smokes. He sends his son to the shop to buy cigarettes, and lights up right in front of his children. In the boy's eyes, the thing becomes completely normal.
When he grows up, he takes it up too. Some take it up copying their friends, others to prove "I am a man, I have personality" — just to prove that much.
And then? The little child sitting beside him breathes in the smoke, his wife suffers, and he has to go to the mosque with bad breath.
And the accounting? The money that burns away every day on packets, over months and years — that too will have to be accounted for one day.
The Shaykh's Answer
The Shaykh says — a strong personality belongs to the one who overcomes his own nafs; not by picking up a cigarette, but by giving it up.
Smoking is haram in the Qur'an and in the Sunnah. In the Qur'an — because it is khabith, and the Prophet ﷺ makes khabith things haram (Surah Al-A'raf, verse 157). Where something is haram even if it has a little benefit along with harm, what is the ruling on something that has no benefit at all?
The Shaykh's advice to shopkeepers too — those who started because of you, the share of their sin falls on your neck. Remove this product from your shop.
The Evidence — Not Harming Oneself with One's Own Hands
وَلَا تُلْقُوا۟ بِأَيْدِيكُمْ إِلَى ٱلتَّهْلُكَةِ
And spend in the way of Allāh and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allāh loves the doers of good. (Surah Al-Baqara 2:195 — Saheeh International; meaning of the complete verse)
The Prophet ﷺ said — "La darara wa la dirar", meaning harm must not be done, nor harm in return for harm. (Sunan Ibn Majah — with a hasan chain) Where the harm is proven, the ruling there is haram.
The Steps to Quitting
- In sujud and between the adhan and iqamah, ask Allah — "O my Lord, free me from this."
- As soon as the craving rises, take out the list of harms and read it — write it on paper and keep it with you.
- Leave the company of smokers and take righteous friends; reduce the number gradually.
- More water, fruit and vegetables; cut down on tea and coffee, and have a glass of lemon or orange juice every day.
