Shaykh Wahid Abdus Salam Bali gave the answer with one simple rule — is the game one of luck, or one of calculation?

How the Question Comes

The sister who asked says it herself — her salah is fine, she has her daily recitation, and she keeps her adhkar too. It is only cards, just to pass a little time.

Questions like this are in every home. Some say all games are haram, others say there is no problem at all as long as no money is involved.

In the middle, the person falls into confusion — friends call, something nags inside, yet nobody hands over a clear answer.

The Shaykh answered with one simple distinction.

The Shaykh's Reply

Games are of two kinds — those that depend on luck and those that depend on calculation and intelligence. A game that depends on luck is not permissible even without money.

The Shaykh says — games that stand on thinking and calculation may be played; the condition is that there be no money betting or gambling. In his view, cards is a game that depends on calculation, so playing it purely for entertainment without money is permissible.

But the Shaykh has added a condition — time must not be wasted. A short time that does not harm your worship or your important duties — that much is the limit.

The Evidence — Where the Limit Is Drawn

مَنْ لَعِبَ بِالنَّرْدَشِيرِ فَكَأَنَّمَا صَبَغَ يَدَهُ فِي لَحْمِ خِنْزِيرٍ وَدَمِهِ

Whoever plays nardashir (a luck-based game similar to dice), it is as if he has dipped his hand in the flesh and blood of a pig. (Sahih Muslim)

And the moment money is staked, it becomes gambling — Allah has made gambling haram (Surah Al-Ma'idah, verse 90). This is exactly the Shaykh's condition: once betting enters, even a permissible game becomes haram.

What to Do

  1. Ask this question first of all: is the game luck-based or calculation-based?
  2. The moment money or any bet enters, stop — it is no longer a game, it is gambling.
  3. Set a time limit; if your worship or important duties suffer, know that the limit has been broken.
  4. If you are in doubt, return to what is certainly halal — and you will have to account for your time as well.
