Ruqyah

Every glance leaves a mark

Shaykh Bali says — in this age, lowering the gaze is a jihad in itself, and its reward is like that of the mujahideen.

Shaykh Bali says — in this age, lowering the gaze is a jihad in itself, and its reward is like that of the mujahideen.

How the scene unfolds

A phone in hand. Open one app and close it, open another and close it, then another. Right beside them the Mushaf icon sits there — never opened.

The Shaykh says it is like this — good deeds are laid out right in front of a person, yet he walks past without reaching out his hand.

The street is no different. From home to the office, so many people pass before your eyes, so many sights pass by.

So the question is — how do I guard my eyes in this age?

The Shaykh's answer

With every glance a drop falls on the heart — white if you lower your gaze, black if you look up.

The Shaykh says, do the accounting yourself at the end of the day — how many white drops gathered today, and how many black? How much of your heart remained white?

And this is not only the responsibility of men. In the same Surah, Allah commanded both men and women to lower their gaze.

Evidence — the command is for both

وَقُل لِّلْمُؤْمِنَٰتِ يَغْضُضْنَ مِنْ أَبْصَٰرِهِنَّ وَيَحْفَظْنَ فُرُوجَهُنَّ

And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment [i.e., beauty] except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess [i.e., slaves], or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allāh in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed. (Surah An-Noor 24:31 — Saheeh International; meaning of the complete verse)

The Prophet ﷺ said — trials are presented to the heart one by one, like the straws of a woven mat; the heart that rejects them receives a white mark, and the heart that accepts them receives a black mark. (Sahih Muslim 144)

What to do

  1. Every morning before you leave, make dua — help me lower my gaze today.
  2. Test yourself on the street: "I will not lift my eyes even once until I reach my destination."
  3. At the shop, pharmacy or counter, get your work done with your gaze kept down.
  4. As much bad as there is online, spread just as much good — a hadith, a beneficial word.
