Are you becoming amazed by your own amal?
Shaykh Wahid Abdus Salam Bali calls this ujb — a disease that quietly slips into a heedless heart. He has also given its treatment in three steps.

Shaykh Wahid Abdus Salam Bali calls this ujb — a disease that quietly slips into a heedless heart. He has also given its treatment in three steps.
How the Disease Takes Hold
An amal is done — a night prayer, a long recitation, or a piece of writing. When it is finished, a sweet feeling rises inside: I managed to do it.
Shaykh Bali says — the name of this feeling is ujb. The disease enters the hearts of some heedless people; right after doing an amal, he sits there amazed by his own amal.
The danger is that it cannot be spotted from the outside. The prayer and recitation all carry on perfectly well; only the claim inside changes.
The Shaykh says — whoever wants to be free of this disease must hold on to three things.
The Shaykh's Answer
You could not perform any act of worship — without Allah's tawfiq. If He had not granted tawfiq, you could not even have stood up for salah.
The first task — to feel Allah's blessings, and to see your own shortcoming in giving thanks. The second — to know that recitation, tahajjud and salah are all His tawfiq. The third — to examine your own amal carefully once.
The Shaykh asks — in the prayer you are proud of, were you with Allah from beginning to end? Three rak'ahs with the mind elsewhere, one rak'ah present — such a prayer does not befit His majesty.
Evidence — Paradise is not a payment for deeds
None of you will be admitted to Paradise by his deeds. The Companions said, "Not even you, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "Not even me — unless Allah covers me with His mercy and grace." (Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)
The Shaykh says — we worship so that Allah may have mercy; when mercy comes, Paradise follows. The more blessings increase, the more thankfulness must increase — so where is the place for pride?
What to Do
- Pause after your amal — remember the blessings, and acknowledge your own shortcoming in giving thanks.
- Remember that tawfiq is His alone — if He had not granted it, there would have been no salah, no recitation, no qiyam al-layl at all.
- Examine the amal you are proud of — in how many rak'ahs your mind was present, and in how many it was not.
- The strength to write, the ability to understand, the thoughts that come to mind — all are given by Him; so say Alhamdulillah.
