Laziness Is Not Merely a Habit, It Is a Disease

The Prophet ﷺ sought refuge from this very thing. Shaykh Bali says — a Muslim is never lazy; and its treatment begins with a dua.

How to Recognize the Disease

The adhan has been called, yet you do not feel like leaving your bed. The office file has been lying there for three days. The study desk is empty too.

At the very start of the program it was said — whoever is gripped by this disease sits down in both this world and the Hereafter, and becomes dependent on others.

Shaykh Bali gives the definition — kasal means lagging behind in work; or not doing fully what one is supposed to do. It happens in three places — in worldly work, in work for the Hereafter, and in one's own work.

So the question is simple — how do I get rid of this laziness?

The Shaykh's Answer

What the Prophet ﷺ sought refuge from is surely a bad thing — so incapacity and laziness are not a habit, but a disease.

The Shaykh says — in describing the hypocrites, Allah said that they stand for prayer lazily (Surah An-Nisa, verse 142). This is not a quality of the believer; the believer comes to prayer energetically, even before the adhan.

The treatment has three steps — asking Allah for help, knowing the status of the obligatory acts, and remembering that Paradise is surrounded by hardships and Hell is surrounded by desires (Sahih Muslim).

Evidence — The Prophet's ﷺ Seeking of Refuge

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ وَالْجُبْنِ وَالْبُخْلِ

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from incapacity, laziness, cowardice and miserliness. (Sahih Bukhari)

The Prophet ﷺ taught Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) to say after every prayer — “Allahumma a'inni 'ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibadatik” (Sunan Abu Dawud, hasan chain).

What to Do

  1. Seek refuge every day — “Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal 'ajzi wal kasal”.
  2. Recite Mu'adh's dua after every prayer — ask for the ability to do dhikr, give thanks and worship beautifully.
  3. Before every task say — “O my Lord, help me”; help comes only from Him.
  4. Double your time — keep up tasbih and istighfar even during wudu and on the way to the mosque.
