Free time is the biggest trap

Shaykh Bali says — time is your life. Whoever spends their time on good deeds is among the good. And the Prophet ﷺ spoke of two blessings in which people lose out the most.

Shaykh Bali says — time is your life. Whoever spends their time on good deeds is among the good. And the Prophet ﷺ spoke of two blessings in which people lose out the most.

How time slips away

You picked up your phone for just one minute. Facebook, then Twitter, then Telegram — and when you looked up, midday had already slipped by.

Shaykh Bali names this as a major cause — the crowd of busyness and entertainment. The solution? Set a fixed time for these things, then switch your phone off.

The second cause — having no clear goal. Allah created you for worship; when your goal is right, even worldly work becomes worship through the power of intention.

The third cause — bad companions. A good friend will help you in goodness; a lazy friend will simply eat up your time.

The Shaykh's answer

The Prophet ﷺ said — There are two blessings in which many people lose out: health and free time.

The Shaykh explains that "maghbun" means being cheated — like selling something worth a hundred thousand taka for a thousand. Time is your most valuable wealth; yet we are giving it away on pointless talk.

He demonstrates it practically — in one minute you can say Subhanallah about seventy times. If you count ten rewards for each tasbih, that is seven hundred in a single minute. What about ten minutes? What about an hour?

Evidence — the oath by time

نِعْمَتَانِ مَغْبُونٌ فِيهِمَا كَثِيرٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ: الصِّحَّةُ وَالْفَرَاغُ

Two blessings — in these two many people lose out: health and free time. (Sahih Bukhari)

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ وَٱلْعَصْرِ

By time, (Surah Al-Asr 103:1 — Saheeh International)

The Shaykh says — Allah only swears by things that are great. By swearing by time, He has made clear how valuable this wealth is.

What to do

  1. Memorize at least three verses (ayahs) every day — recite them twenty times and they will stick, in sha Allah.
  2. Set a time limit for Facebook and YouTube, then switch your phone off.
  3. Choose your companions carefully — a person follows the path of his friend.
  4. Reconcile two people who are quarreling — the Prophet ﷺ called this better than voluntary prayer, fasting and charity.
