What the Shaykh Says Again and Again
The Shaykh tells patients one thing again and again: do not save istirja only for a major calamity. Recite it at every pain.
Your head begins to ache — Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un. A stab in your back — again. Your chest tightens — again.
One patient asked in surprise, "How many times should I recite it?" The Shaykh said, "Even if it is 100 times, even if it is 200 times. As many times as you feel it."
Allah will reward you every single time. Why would you give up so much reward?
What You Will See After a Few Days
You will see the difference yourself — you will see how they are leaving you.
Because you have held on to a dhikr that they never want you to keep. The pain that was meant to break you has become a source of reward.
What the Qur'an Says
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient, Who, when disaster strikes them, say, "Indeed we belong to Allāh, and indeed to Him we will return." (Surah Al-Baqara 2:155-156 — Saheeh International; meaning of the complete verse)
Add to it the dua from the hadith of Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) — اللَّهُمَّ أْجُرْنِي فِي مُصِيبَتِي وَأَخْلِفْ لِي خَيْرًا مِنْهَا — O Allah, reward me in my calamity and give me something better than it. (Sahih Muslim 918)
What to Do Today
- As soon as you feel pain or discomfort, recite istirja right away.
- Add the dua with it — ask for reward and something better than it.
- Do not put pressure on yourself with counting — as many times as it comes to mind.
- Not for a day or two; keep at it — the difference comes with time.

Treatment does not work while you carry despair in your heart
When you keep up your amal for month after month and still see no improvement, one thought builds up in the heart — it will never happen for me. The Shaykh says this very thought is the greatest obstacle.

No One Ever Kicks the Stove
The heat of the stove, the splash of oil, the cut of a knife — you put up with it all with a smile. From there the Shaykh said: where there is love, hardship does not feel like hardship.
