No One Ever Kicks the Stove

The heat of the stove, the splash of oil, the cut of a knife — you put up with it all with a smile. From there the Shaykh said: where there is love, hardship does not feel like hardship.

The heat of the stove, the splash of oil, the cut of a knife — you put up with it all with a smile. From there the Shaykh said: where there is love, hardship does not feel like hardship.

The Scene the Shaykh Described

A sister said, weeping — her husband is ill, with a spiritual problem. He doesn't even look at her, and he is harsh with her over every little thing.

The Shaykh reminded her of a scene. If her husband is five minutes late coming home with the car, a fire flares up inside her — Where have you been all this time?

Yet every day, for hours on end, in the kitchen — the heat of the stove, the splash of oil, the cut of the knife, the sting of onions, a backache from standing.

When someone offers a little praise, she says, "Tomorrow I'll cook even better." She never kicks the stove and curses at it.

The Shaykh's Point — Balance

Where there is love, hardship does not feel like hardship. Shaytan makes the small blows from an ill spouse look huge.

This is not to justify his harshness — that matter is separate and is his to answer for. This is about protecting your heart: so that every harsh word does not eat away at the very foundation.

The Evidence — If You Dislike One Trait

لَا يَفْرَكْ مُؤْمِنٌ مُؤْمِنَةً، إِنْ كَرِهَ مِنْهَا خُلُقًا رَضِيَ مِنْهَا آخَرَ

A believing man should not hate a believing woman; if he dislikes one trait in her, he will be pleased with another. (Sahih Muslim 1469)

Although the hadith speaks to men, the principle applies in both directions — if you dislike one side, look at the other side. In days of illness, this very looking is what saves a home.

What to Do Today

  1. With every harsh word, tell yourself — this is not him, this is his illness.
  2. At least once a day, make dua for yourself too — you are tired as well.
  3. Do not neglect your own meals, sleep and a little rest.
  4. Make dua for your husband in private — not complaints in front of him.
