Ruqyah

Treatment does not work while you carry despair in your heart

When you keep up your amal for month after month and still see no improvement, one thought builds up in the heart — it will never happen for me. The Shaykh says this very thought is the greatest obstacle.

When you keep up your amal for month after month and still see no improvement, one thought builds up in the heart — it will never happen for me. The Shaykh says this very thought is the greatest obstacle.

The scene the Shaykh described

A patient comes in. His face is weary. He says — I recite Surah Al-Baqarah every day, I recite four or five juz a day, I stand in tahajjud at night, and I have given up sins.

Month after month. Yet nothing changes. The Shaykh asks question after question — and what is inside comes out. The patient lowers his head and says, "I feel it will never happen for me."

The Shaykh then pauses. Because there is no mistake in the list of amal. The mistake lies beneath the list, in a corner of the heart — there despair has made its nest.

The Shaykh's words

Even a twenty-four-hour program will not help if there is no husn al-dhann (thinking well) of Allah — the belief that He will surely help, even if late.

We count our amal, look for results, and match up dates. But perhaps Allah has prolonged the test precisely to build this very thing within you. Delay does not mean rejection.

The evidence — the one who waited the longest

O my sons, go and find out about Joseph and his brother and despair not of relief from Allāh. Indeed, no one despairs of relief from Allāh except the disbelieving people." (Surah Yusuf 12:87 — Saheeh International; meaning of the complete verse)

These words were spoken by Yaqub (peace be upon him) — even after losing his sight from weeping year after year. The one who endured such a long wait is the very one who forbids despair.

What to do today

  1. Do not reduce your amal — today, just change the words of your heart.
  2. Remind yourself several times a day — Allah is with me.
  3. Utter the words of Yaqub (peace be upon him) with your tongue, especially in moments of weakness.
  4. Do not think of a delayed result as rejection anymore — make this much your intention today.
