How Far Should a Wife Obey When Her Husband Is Unjust?
The questioner asks: what is the minimum limit of obedience to a husband, so that I do not fall into something that displeases Allah?

The questioner asks: what is the minimum limit of obedience to a husband, so that I do not fall into something that displeases Allah?
How the Question Comes
The question of a weary sister: “My husband is unjust to me. How far should I obey him, so that I do not fall into something that displeases Allah?”
This pain inside the home is the one least spoken about. Outside, everything looks fine; inside, a person breaks a little more each day.
Some say: accept everything, this is the religion. Others say: leave everything and go. In the middle, the person keeps wavering.
Shaykh Bali began his answer not with the wife's duty, but with the husband's duty.
The Shaykh's Answer
It is obligatory upon every husband to treat his wife well and with kindness. No one has given him the right to be unjust.
The Shaykh's advice for the wife: try to obey your husband as far as you are able, and make dua to Allah to bring him back from injustice. For the husband's heart is in Allah's hands alone.
The Shaykh also says: whatever a wife does to please her husband is worship, whether he thanks her or not. So hold on to good conduct not for people but for Allah; the reward is with Him alone.
Evidence: The Door That Never Closes
وَإِذَا سَأَلَكَ عِبَادِى عَنِّى فَإِنِّى قَرِيبٌ ۖ أُجِيبُ دَعْوَةَ ٱلدَّاعِ إِذَا دَعَانِ
And when My servants ask you, [O Muḥammad], concerning Me - indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided. (Surah Al-Baqara 2:186 — Saheeh International; meaning of the complete verse)
The dua the Shaykh taught: “O my Lord, my husband's heart is in Your hands; make him behave in a way that pleases You.”
What to Do
- Obey within your capacity, but not in disobedience to Allah.
- Make dua every day for your husband's guidance; never curse him.
- Hold on to good conduct for Allah's sake; the reward is stored with Him.
- When the injustice goes beyond limits, do not stay silent; seek help from a trusted elder or a scholar.
