The One Whose Mouth Will Be Bridled with Fire

Shaykh Wahid Abdus Salam Bali has painted three scenes — and all three share one root: betrayal of trust.

Three Scenes from the Plain of Resurrection

The crowd is terrifying, the heat is even more terrifying, and people are drowning in sweat. A man has a bridle of fire in his mouth — he is screaming. He is the one who knew knowledge but hid it from people.

Another has a huge, heavy piece of land hanging around his neck — cut from seven layers. He had forcibly taken a handspan of someone else's land.

Behind a third person a flag is planted, on which is written — This is the treachery of so-and-so. He made a promise and broke it, and betrayed a trust that was placed with him.

The Shaykh says — even if no one in this world caught them, on that day Allah will expose it in front of everyone.

The Shaykh's Answer

The rulings of the Shariah are a trust placed on our shoulders — so every sin is in reality a betrayal of that trust.

The one who cast his eyes on the haram, the one who abandoned Fajr, the one who lied, the one who backbit — in the Shaykh's words, each of them has broken the trust. But the matter does not end here; right away he also pointed out the door of repentance.

Evidence — The Door of Despair Is Closed

Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allāh. Indeed, Allāh forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful." (Surah Az-Zumar 39:53 — Saheeh International)

The Shaykh says — giving sadaqah after a sin is also mustahabb; the Prophet ﷺ said that sadaqah extinguishes sin just as water extinguishes fire. (Jami at-Tirmidhi)

What to Do

  1. Repent to Allah from that sin — without delay, today itself.
  2. Make a pledge to Allah — that you will not return to that sin.
  3. Give up the sin and also cut off its means and causes.
  4. Give a little sadaqah as far as you are able; and if anyone has a right owed to them, return it.
