The snake will say — I am your wealth

Shaykh Bali says — the snake will speak, saying ‘I am your wealth, I am your hoarded treasure’. This is the person who did not pay zakat on his wealth.

Shaykh Bali says — the snake will speak, saying ‘I am your wealth, I am your hoarded treasure’. This is the person who did not pay zakat on his wealth.

The scene

The Day of Judgment — scorching heat, a long day, unbearable crowds. Look into the distance: an enormous snake is coiled several times around a man's neck.

He wants to remove the snake but cannot. The snake stretches out its head and bites down on both his cheeks; blood runs down.

Go a little closer and listen — the snake is speaking: I am your wealth, I am your hoarded treasure.

The Shaykh says — this is the person to whom Allah gave wealth, but he did not pay its zakat.

The Shaykh's answer

Zakat is not a matter of guesswork — it is a calculated, fixed portion, one part in forty.

The Shaykh says — slaughtering a cow and distributing it, or handing out food packets, does not fulfil zakat. Because that portion is no longer in your ownership; it is the right of the poor person, and another person's property cannot be spent without his permission.

The evidence — the wealth itself will become a shackle

Whoever Allah has given wealth and who did not pay its zakat, on the Day of Judgment his wealth will be made into a venomous snake; it will wrap around his neck like a shackle and say — I am your wealth, I am your hoarded treasure. (Sahih Bukhari)

Gold is no exception. Seeing a thick bangle on a woman's hand, the Prophet ﷺ asked — do you pay zakat on this? Hearing ‘No’, he said: Would you like to wear a bangle of fire on the Day of Judgment? (Sunan Abi Dawud — Hasan)

What to do

  1. Calculate once a year — simply divide your total wealth by forty, and that is the zakat.
  2. Once the nisab is reached, zakat on gold must also be paid — even if the jewelry just sits at home.
  3. In business, zakat is due on both capital and profit; calculate after deducting debts.
  4. Zakat money is the right of the poor person — do not buy goods for them unless they ask for it.
