A strange scene on the plain of the Day of Resurrection. Shaykh Bali says — these are the ones who used to show arrogance toward Allah's servants in this world.

What the scene looks like

Imagine — on the plain of the Day of Resurrection there are men and women, but their height is one centimetre or even less. They have hands, feet, eyes, noses and ears, everything.

The rest of the people walk at normal height, while these are trampled underfoot — humiliation covers them from every side.

Who are they? The Shaykh says — they are those men and women who used to be arrogant toward people in this world. The narration is hasan in Sunan at-Tirmidhi.

Then he shows, step by step — where arrogance actually comes from.

The Shaykh's answer

Wealth, position, beauty, knowledge and lineage — arrogance raises its head from these five places.

The Shaykh says — the poor person you look down on may have a higher rank with Allah than you. Beauty can vanish in a moment, the light of the eyes can go out, and so can the intellect. The One who gave can also take away.

Evidence — gratitude increases

And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'" (Surah Ibrahim 14:7 — Saheeh International)

In a hadith qudsi Allah says — Pride is My cloak and greatness is My garment; whoever contends with Me over them, I will throw him into the Fire (Sunan Abu Dawud — the chain is sahih).

What to do

  1. The higher Allah raises you, the more humble you should be — the Prophet ﷺ did exactly this on the day of the conquest of Makkah.
  2. When you receive a blessing, be grateful — gratitude increases blessings.
  3. As your knowledge grows, increase your fear of Allah; do not belittle anyone with your knowledge.
  4. Do not measure anyone by lineage or position — it is amal that moves a person forward.
