Those Who Are Kept Inside the Stove

Shaykh Bali says — the description of the punishment is not only meant to frighten, but to close the doors. Islam blocked the paths long before zina.

The Scene

On the night of the Mi'raj, the Prophet ﷺ saw a pit like an oven, with naked men and women inside. Flames of fire were reaching them from below.

Whenever the fire touches them, they cry out and leap up; then they go back down. It was asked — who are these? It was said: These are the men and women who commit zina.

The Shaykh says — this is why its punishment has been made severe even in this world, so that people do not go anywhere near this crime.

But the real point is not the punishment — the real point is where the path begins.

The Shaykh's Answer

Allah did not say only ‘Do not commit zina’ — He said ‘Do not even go near zina’.

Shaykh Bali goes through the doors of approaching it one by one — the gaze, seclusion and touch. Women, like men, have been told to lower their gaze (Surah An-Nur, verses 30–31). Keeping your eyes lowered in the shop is also a kind of jihad.

The Evidence — the Door Itself Is Closed

وَلَا تَقْرَبُوا۟ ٱلزِّنَىٰٓ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ فَٰحِشَةًۭ وَسَآءَ سَبِيلًۭا

And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way. (Surah Al-Israa 17:32 — Saheeh International)

The Shaykh reminds us — No man is alone with a woman except that the third among them is Shaytan (Musnad Ahmad — the chain is sahih). Talking alone on either side of a camera is also a form of this seclusion.

What to Do

  1. Keep your eyes lowered — the instruction is not only for men, but for women too.
  2. Do not be alone with anyone who is not a mahram — at home, at the office or on a video call.
  3. Give up shaking hands between non-mahram men and women; paternal and maternal cousins are included in this too.
  4. When you go out, wear loose clothing — not perfume or eye-catching adornment.
