The Grave Where the Stone Keeps Coming Down

Shaykh Bali reminds us of the scene of the grave that the Prophet ﷺ saw — a stone falls on the head of the one who neglected the prayer, the head is restored, and again the stone.

The Scene

One man is lying down, and another stands over him — a stone in his hand. The stone comes down on the head, and the head is crushed.

The stone rolls away, the man goes and picks it up; by then the head has been restored. Again the blow, and again. This narration is reported in Sahih Bukhari.

Shaykh Bali says — this is the person who prays some of the prayers, but sleeps through Fajr, and sometimes even leaves out Dhuhr.

Just as a house leans when one of its five pillars breaks — so when the pillar of salah falls, the deen bends in the same way.

The Shaykh's Answer

Whoever protects the five daily prayers, on the Day of Resurrection they will be his light, his proof and his salvation.

And whoever does not protect them — for him there is no light, no proof and no salvation. The Shaykh says, just as no dirt remains on the body of one who bathes five times a day in a river by his door, the five daily prayers likewise wash away sins.

The Proof — The Promise of the Five Prayers

خَمْسُ صَلَوَاتٍ كَتَبَهُنَّ اللَّهُ عَلَى الْعِبَادِ، مَنْ حَافَظَ عَلَيْهِنَّ كُنَّ لَهُ نُورًا وَبُرْهَانًا وَنَجَاةً يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ

Allah has prescribed the five daily prayers upon His servants. Whoever protects them, on the Day of Resurrection they will be his light, his proof and his salvation. (Musnad Ahmad — the chain is sahih)Copy

The Shaykh adds — whoever prays Fajr is under Allah's protection for the whole day (Sahih Muslim). And a servant is closest to his Lord in sujood — so ask much there.

What to Do

1. Rather than an alarm for Fajr, make the decision to sleep early — the start is at night.
2. Do not leave any prayer time unperformed; if one is missed, pray it right away.
3. Go into sujood and say in your own words — O my Lord, grant me the ability to pray.
4. Even if your heart is not present, do not give up standing in prayer; and make dua asking for khushu.
