The One Swimming in a River of Blood

A scene shown to the Prophet ﷺ in a dream. Shaykh Wahid Abdussalam Bali says — this is the condition of the one who consumed interest in his grave. The scene is not meant to frighten, but to give a chance to return.

A scene shown to the Prophet ﷺ in a dream. Shaykh Wahid Abdussalam Bali says — this is the condition of the one who consumed interest in his grave. The scene is not meant to frighten, but to give a chance to return.

The Scene in the Grave

A river — but not of water, of blood. A man is swimming in it, and another is standing on the bank.

Every time he swims close to the bank, the man on the bank crams a stone into his mouth. He goes back into the river. He comes again, and again the stone.

The Prophet ﷺ asked — who is this? It was said: This is the one who consumed interest. The narration is in Sahih Bukhari.

Shaykh Bali says — the punishment does not stop at the grave; the house that interest enters, barakah is wiped out of that house as well.

The Shaykh's Reply

The one who deals in interest spends his night under the curse of Allah, and begins his morning in His displeasure.

Allah has said that He destroys interest and increases sadaqah (Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 276). And for those who do not give up interest, a declaration of war has come from Allah and His Messenger (Surah Al-Baqarah, verses 278–279).

Evidence — the curse is not only on the one who takes

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed the one who takes interest, the one who gives it, the one who records it, and its two witnesses; and he said — they are all the same. (Sahih Muslim 1598)

The Shaykh also warns about debt — the soul of the believer remains held back because of his debt until it is paid off (Sunan at-Tirmidhi). So do not take on debt without need.

What to Do

  1. Alongside the restlessness and sickness in the home, also examine the source of your income once.
  2. A loan with an extra condition at a fixed rate — give up both taking and giving it.
  3. Partnership in a fixed share of the profit is permissible, not at a fixed rate on the capital.
  4. If you want to exchange old gold for new gold, first sell, and then purchase separately afterwards.
