The One Who Recites the Qur'an but Does Not Do Amal (Practice) of It
On the night of the Mi'raj, the Prophet ﷺ saw some people whose heads were being crushed with stones. Jibril (peace be upon him) said — These are the ones who take the Qur'an, then throw it away.

On the night of the Mi'raj, the Prophet ﷺ saw some people whose heads were being crushed with stones. Jibril (peace be upon him) said — These are the ones who take the Qur'an, then throw it away.
The Scene
On the night of the Mi'raj, the Prophet ﷺ passed by the graves of some people — their heads were being crushed with stones, again and again.
He asked — Who are these, O Jibril? The answer came: These are the people who take up the Qur'an, then reject it — that is, they do not do amal (practice) of it.
Shaykh Bali says — the Qur'an is not the speech of an angel, nor the speech of any human being. It is the Kalam of Allah; when reading it, you must remember that you are reading the words of the King.
So the question is not about the amount of recitation — the question is about what changed after reading.
The Shaykh's Answer
Hearing the verse about interest and still continuing with interest — that very Qur'an will be a proof against you on the Day of Judgment.
The Shaykh says — in dhikr there are ten rewards for every word, and in the Qur'an ten for every letter. But the Qur'an came down as the constitution of life — creed, worship, dealings and character are all under it. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said that the character of the Prophet was the Qur'an.
Evidence — the Qur'an will come as an intercessor
اقْرَءُوا الْقُرْآنَ فَإِنَّهُ يَأْتِي يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ شَفِيعًا لِأَصْحَابِهِ
Recite the Qur'an; for on the Day of Resurrection it will come as an intercessor for its companions. (Sahih Muslim 804)
Allah says that this Qur'an shows the way that is most upright (Surah Bani Isra'il, verse 9). The Shaykh adds — the zakah of knowledge is to do amal (practice) and to teach others.
What to Do
- Even if you have memorized only one juz, recite it in your prayer — it will also become muraja'ah (revision).
- Whichever verse forbids something, give up that one deed today — this is amal.
- Teach at least Surah Al-Fatihah to your child or someone you know.
- Take up the night prayer — even if with short surahs, following the sunnah of 11 rak'ahs.
