Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) left five words of counsel to his son Abdur Rahman. Shaykh Bali says — these five are enough for a whole lifetime.
The Five Counsels
Ash-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates on the authority of Abdur Rahman — when the death of his father Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) drew near, he gathered his children, then said:
- Remain without hope in people — this is instant wealth
- Give up asking people for your needs — this is instant poverty
- Do not do any deed for which you will have to seek forgiveness later
- If you can, be such that each day is better than yesterday
- Pray every salah like a farewell salah
The Shaykh's Explanation
Stretching out your hand to people is instant poverty; and giving up hope in people is itself instant wealth.
The Shaykh says: do not hang your heart on the wealth of the rich, the strength of the strong, or the power of the powerful. Hang your heart on the King of kings. Tell Him whatever you need — Ya Rabb.
How many poor people are in truth rich, because they are content with what Allah has allotted to them; and how many rich people are in truth poor, because all they have is "I want more."
Evidence — we must ask from One alone
وَقَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ٱدْعُونِىٓ أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ
And your Lord says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you." Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell [rendered] contemptible. (Surah Ghafir 40:60 — Saheeh International; meaning of the complete verse)
The fifth counsel is the heaviest — every salah should be like the last salah. Imam Ash-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) used to say, "When I say 'Allahu Akbar', I throw the world behind my back."
What to Do
- When you have a need, first tell Allah — Ya Rabb; the doors of people come after.
- For any word or deed for which you would have to seek forgiveness later, stop before you speak.
- Increase a little every day — a little more today than yesterday.
- Pray every salah like a farewell salah — as if it were your last.
