Two Funerals — One in the Heavens

Shaykh Bali says that when a righteous believer dies, people on earth carry the funeral of his body, while the angels in the heavens carry the funeral of his soul.

How the Scene Unfolds

People carry the body on their shoulders, step by step, all the way to the grave. And the angels rush with the soul — from one heaven to the next.

At every gate it is asked: Whose is this pure soul? The answer comes: So-and-so, son of so-and-so, by the beautiful name he was called in the world.

The angels closest to each heaven escort him up to the next heaven — like a procession of farewells, one after another.

When he reaches the seventh heaven, the declaration comes: My servant has spoken the truth, so record his book of deeds in 'Illiyyin.

The Shaykh's Reply

Then the soul is returned to the grave, to the body — and two angels come and question him.

He says: My Lord is Allah, my religion is Islam, my prophet is Muhammad ﷺ; I read the Qur'an and I believed it to be true. Then the grave is widened as far as the eye can see, and a door of Paradise is opened for him.

Then a man comes, handsome in face, dressed in white, and fragrant. "Who are you?" — he says, I am your righteous deeds.

The Evidence — The Question Raised in the Heavens

مَا هَذِهِ الرُّوحُ الطَّيِّبَةُ؟ فَيُقَالُ: فُلَانُ بْنُ فُلَانٍ بِأَحْسَنِ أَسْمَائِهِ الَّتِي كَانَ يُسَمَّى بِهَا فِي الدُّنْيَا

Whose is this pure soul? It is said: So-and-so, son of so-and-so, by the beautiful name he was called in the world. (Musnad Ahmad — with a sahih chain)Copy

On the other hand, the gates of the heavens are not even opened for a foul soul. So the Shaykh's question is direct — Which funeral do you want?

What to Do

1. Increase your righteous deeds — in the grave, they are what will come and stand beside you in a beautiful form.
2. Do not merely read the Qur'an, live by it — the answers to the questions come from there.
3. Keep all your prayers on time, including Fajr; do not take a step toward disobedience.
4. Make dua — that Allah makes the grave a garden of Paradise.
