Shaykh Bali, drawing on the verse of Surah Fussilat, showed that there are only two conditions: saying 'Our Lord is Allah,' and remaining steadfast upon it.
What the Verse Says
Allah says: Indeed, those who say 'Our Lord is Allah' and then remain steadfast, the angels descend upon them: Do not fear and do not grieve; rather, receive the glad tidings of Paradise, which you were promised. (Surah Fussilat, verse 30)
We were your friends in the life of this world and will be in the Hereafter; and there you will have whatever your souls desire. (Surah Fussilat, verse 31)
Zayd ibn Aslam (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The angels descend in three places: at the time of death, in the grave, and on the Day of Resurrection.
That is why Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) said at the time of his death: O death, grip as tightly as you can; this is only a journey towards Paradise.
The Shaykh's Answer
There are two conditions: iman and istiqamah. Iman without amal (practice) does not take one to Jannah, and amal without iman has no value.
The Shaykh says that 'Our Lord is Allah' means that creation, provision and management of all affairs belong to Him, and worship is for Him alone. Fear, trust, hope and refuge are all directed to Him.
And istiqamah means running one's character, dealings and values entirely according to His Shariah. Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) used to say: Iman is not merely wishful hope or outward adornment; iman is what settles in the heart and is confirmed by amal.
The Evidence: The Whole Religion in One Sentence
قُلْ: آمَنْتُ بِاللَّهِ، ثُمَّ اسْتَقِمْ
Say, 'I believe in Allah,' and then remain steadfast. (Sahih Muslim)
The angels say: There is no fear regarding what lies ahead; we are with you. The grave will be a garden of Paradise, and the reckoning will be easy. (Surah Fussilat, verses 30–32)
What to Do
- Say the words 'My Lord is Allah' with your tongue, and follow that in your daily decisions.
- Hold firmly to the obligatory acts and give up major sins; istiqamah begins with these two.
- Confirm your iman with amal; a claim by the tongue alone is not enough.
- Make dua: Allahumma thabbitni, O Allah, keep me steadfast.
