What They Said on Their Deathbeds
Shaykh Bali has gathered together the last words of several people — a Companion, caliphs, an imam. The last words of every one of them came from a broken heart.

Shaykh Bali has gathered together the last words of several people — a Companion, caliphs, an imam. The last words of every one of them came from a broken heart.
How the Scene Unfolds
At the time of his death, Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said — Sit me up. Sitting, he recited tasbih, takbir and tahlil. Then he called out — O my Lord, have mercy on this sinful old man with a hard heart.
The wife of Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) was weeping — Alas, what sorrow! He removed the cloth from his face and said — No, rather say, what joy! Tomorrow we will meet our loved ones — Muhammad ﷺ and his companions.
Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to his son — Lay my head down on the ground. Placing his cheek on the earth, he said — Woe to me if my Lord does not have mercy on me.
Caliph Ma'mun asked for earth to be spread on the palace floor, and placing his cheek on it, he said — O You whose kingdom never ends, have mercy on the one whose kingdom has come to an end.
The Shaykh's Answer
Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) was weeping at the time of his death. His son said — The Prophet ﷺ gave you good news, did he not? Yet he kept weeping.
He said, I have passed through three states. At first I disliked the Prophet ﷺ more than anyone; had I died in that state, I would have gone to Hellfire. Then Islam came; at the time of the pledge I withdrew my hand and asked for a condition — that I be forgiven.
The third state — the time of responsibility and authority; I do not know what I did there. Saying this, he wept again.
The Evidence — Islam Erases Everything Before It
أَمَا عَلِمْتَ أَنَّ الْإِسْلَامَ يَهْدِمُ مَا كَانَ قَبْلَهُ
Do you not know that Islam erases everything that came before it? (Sahih Muslim)
Imam Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked in his final moments, how are you? He said — I am leaving the world, moving toward the Hereafter, and coming face to face with my bad deeds.
What to Do
- Repent before death comes — Islam and sincere repentance erase everything before them.
- If you have any responsibility or trust, reconcile your accounts today — that is where the greatest fear lies.
- Do not take pride in your deeds; stand before Allah with a broken heart.
- May your last words be La ilaha illallah — build the habit starting today.
