That Moment When the Soul Departs

Shaykh Bali cites the narration of Bara ibn Azib (may Allah be pleased with him): the soul of the believer comes out as easily as a drop flowing from the mouth of a waterskin.

Shaykh Bali cites the narration of Bara ibn Azib (may Allah be pleased with him): the soul of the believer comes out as easily as a drop flowing from the mouth of a waterskin.

How the Scene Unfolds

The funeral of an Ansari companion. The grave had not yet been prepared. The Prophet ﷺ sat down, and the companions sat around him.

He said: Seek refuge in Allah from the punishment of the grave. He said this two or three times.

Then he said that when a believing servant is cut off from this world and moves toward the Hereafter, angels with bright white faces descend from the sky, bringing a shroud from Paradise and a fragrance from Paradise.

They sit spread out as far as the eye can see. Then the Angel of Death descends and sits by the person's head.

The Shaykh's Answer

The Angel of Death calls: O pure soul, come out to Allah's forgiveness and pleasure. The soul comes out like a drop flowing down.

But for a disobedient servant, angels with black faces descend; the call comes: O wicked soul, come out to Allah's wrath and displeasure. Then the soul is torn out piece by piece, as if a thorny iron rod were being pulled out of wet wool.

The Evidence — The Call of the Angel of Death

أَيَّتُهَا النَّفْسُ الطَّيِّبَةُ، اخْرُجِي إِلَى مَغْفِرَةٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَرِضْوَانٍ

O pure soul, come out to Allah's forgiveness and pleasure. (Musnad Ahmad and Sunan Abi Dawud — sahih)

The Shaykh's most important point is right here — the answers to the three questions of the grave do not come by memorization, they come through amal. Whoever stood firm in this world, Allah keeps him firm there.

What to Do

  1. Seek refuge in Allah from the punishment of the grave every day — the Prophet ﷺ himself taught this.
  2. Hold fast to the five daily prayers, including Fajr — this is the greatest preparation for standing firm.
  3. Stay away from violating people's rights and from unlawful earnings; protect your eyes and your tongue.
  4. Make dua that Allah keeps you firm at the last moment.
