Shaykh Wahid Abdus Salam Bali has explained step by step — what exactly it means to prepare for death.

An Incident

The Shaykh says — someone once told him about his friend's wedding night. After seeing off the guests, the groom was talking on the phone, about to go and bring the bride.

Trembling with joy, he fell down — and never got up. The marriage took place, but there was no married life; the happiness was not completed.

The Shaykh says — how many people slept and never woke; how many set out on a journey and never returned; how many stood up and could not sit down again.

So there is only one question — how will you make the preparation?

The Shaykh's Answer

The first step — remembering death often. The second step — visiting the sick.

The Shaykh says — when you see the suffering of a patient, you will thank Allah and hurry to do good deeds, before that state overtakes you. If someone visits a patient in the morning, seventy thousand angels make dua for him until evening. (Sunan at-Tirmidhi)

The third step — listening often to talks that stir the heart. The Shaykh says the heart becomes hardened; one needs someone to wake it from heedlessness.

Evidence — Who Will Be Your Companion

لَا تُصَاحِبْ إِلَّا مُؤْمِنًا وَلَا يَأْكُلْ طَعَامَكَ إِلَّا تَقِيٌّ

Do not keep anyone as a companion except a believer, and let no one eat your food except a person of taqwa. (Sunan at-Tirmidhi — with a hasan chain)

The Shaykh says — a believing friend helps you when he sees you in good, and warns you when he sees you in wrong. And oppression will be darkness on the Day of Resurrection — repay the rights of people today.

What to Do

  1. Before sleeping, check whether any right of another person remains owed; if it does, settle it today.
  2. If any salah is still owed, pray it before sleeping — you may not wake up from your sleep.
  3. Go to visit the sick, visit the graves, and keep the company of righteous people.
  4. Fill every hour with istighfar and tasbih — light on the tongue, heavy on the scale.
