Death — the Silent Adviser

Shaykh Wahid Abdus Salam Bali says — remembering death is a forgotten Sunnah; yet without saying a word, it gives the sternest advice of all.

Shaykh Wahid Abdus Salam Bali says — remembering death is a forgotten Sunnah; yet without saying a word, it gives the sternest advice of all.

A narration

The Shaykh mentions a narration — the Angel of Death used to come to Sulayman (peace be upon him) in the form of a man. One day a man entered the house, and the angel kept staring at him with a stern gaze.

The man became frightened and said — O Prophet of Allah, command the wind to carry me to a faraway land. The wind carried him away in an instant.

The next day the angel said — I was surprised, for the man was sitting with you, yet I had been commanded to take his soul shortly afterwards in that faraway land.

When the time came and I went there, I found him already waiting for me. No one knows in which land his death will come.

The Shaykh's words

The Shaykh says — remember death every day; this adviser stops you without saying a word.

If death comes to mind while standing in salah, the prayer is performed with care; if death comes to mind when a sin presents itself, it can be abandoned; when a forbidden desire arises, it fades; and when you open the Qur'an, your recitation gains depth.

The Shaykh's regret — most people remember death only on the day of a funeral. Yet the Prophet ﷺ told us to remember death often.

Evidence — everyone will have to taste it

كُلُّ نَفْسٍۢ ذَآئِقَةُ ٱلْمَوْتِ ۗ وَإِنَّمَا تُوَفَّوْنَ أُجُورَكُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ

Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion. (Surah Aal-i-Imraan 3:185 — Saheeh International; meaning of the complete verse)

The Prophet ﷺ said — Remember often the destroyer of pleasures, that is, death. (Sunan at-Tirmidhi — hasan) And no one knows in which land he will die (Surah Luqman, verse 34).

What to do

  1. Remember death at least once every day — make it a habit.
  2. Go to visit the graves from time to time; stand for a while beside the grave of someone you know.
  3. When a sin presents itself, ask yourself — what if the call came while I was in this state?
  4. Ask Allah to always remind you of death.
