The Real Cause of That Tightness in the Chest
Shaykh Wahid Abdussalam Bali has pointed out the cause right from the root — the body's food is there, but the soul's food is missing.

Shaykh Wahid Abdussalam Bali has pointed out the cause right from the root — the body's food is there, but the soul's food is missing.
How the Problem Arises
The person is doing well in every respect — there is work, there is a home, and no lack of food and clothing. Yet inside the chest there is a tightness, a restlessness; he cannot find the reason.
The Shaykh says — a human being is made of two things: the body and the soul. The body begins from the earth, and its food also comes from the earth. The soul begins from the heavens, and its food also comes from the heavens.
Salah, fasting, zakat, sadaqah (charity), serving one's parents, maintaining family ties — these are the food of the soul.
Restlessness begins when there is no balance between the two — the body eats its fill, while the soul goes hungry.
The Shaykh's Answer
You have given the body all its food, but you have left the soul unfed — the restlessness comes from exactly there.
The Shaykh says — when your chest tightens, get up, perform wudu, pray two long rak'ahs of salah, and tell Allah about your sorrow and hardship. Then open the Qur'an and calmly, unhurriedly do recitation — your inside will feel lighter.
And take some money and give it to a poor family. The Shaykh says — when you come back, you will find that it feels different inside; this is the taste of faith.
The Evidence and the Dua of Distress
أَلَا بِذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ ٱلْقُلُوبُ
Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allāh. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allāh hearts are assured." (Surah Ar-Ra'd 13:28 — Saheeh International; meaning of the complete verse)
The Prophet ﷺ used to recite this in times of anxiety — the Shaykh says, keep reciting it again and again until the distress is lifted. (Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)
Daily Routine
- Pray Fajr in congregation — whoever prays Fajr in congregation is under Allah's protection.
- After Fajr, sit for dhikr or recitation, and after sunrise pray two rak'ahs of Salat ad-Duha.
- Before sleeping, perform wudu and pray two rak'ahs; each day, recite one juz of the Qur'an calmly and unhurriedly.
- Hold firmly to the morning and evening adhkar; along with them, qiyam al-layl — even if with short surahs.
