Mu'adh's Question in a Moment of Closeness

Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) asked for a practice that would take him to Paradise. In reply, the Prophet ﷺ opened up the head of Islam, its pillar, and the door of goodness.

Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) asked for a practice that would take him to Paradise. In reply, the Prophet ﷺ opened up the head of Islam, its pillar, and the door of goodness.

The Scene as It Was

One dawn on a journey, Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) found himself right beside the Prophet ﷺ. He did not let the opportunity slip — "O Messenger of Allah, tell me of an amal that will take me into Paradise and keep me far from Hellfire."

The Prophet ﷺ said — You have asked about something great; yet it is easy for the one for whom Allah makes it easy.

Right here Shaykh Bali pauses and says — That is why a sick old man stands in prayer at night, while a healthy young man cannot. If a task feels hard, first make the dua for ease.

Then the Prophet ﷺ went on, step by step — the foundation, the pillar, the peak, the door of goodness, and the reins of everything.

The Shaykh's Explanation

The foundation is Islam, the pillar is salah, the peak is jihad — and the reins of everything is one thing: the tongue.

He also pointed out two doors of goodness — sadaqah, which extinguishes sins, and a servant's prayer in the depth of the night. Along with it he recited that verse of Surah As-Sajdah (verses 16-17), where their sides draw away from their beds.

Evidence — the Head, the Pillar and the Peak

رَأْسُ الْأَمْرِ الْإِسْلَامُ، وَعَمُودُهُ الصَّلَاةُ، وَذِرْوَةُ سَنَامِهِ الْجِهَادُ

The head of every matter is Islam, its pillar is salah, and its peak is jihad. (Sunan at-Tirmidhi — the hadith is hasan sahih)

At the end, the Prophet ﷺ took hold of his own tongue and said — Restrain this. Is it not the harvest of their tongues that throws people face down into Hellfire? (Sunan at-Tirmidhi)

What to Do

  1. For the amal that feels hard, make dua first — "O my Lord, make it easy for me".
  2. Keep the five daily prayers in order — this is the pillar of the religion; when the pillar falls, the house does not stand.
  3. Give sadaqah every day, even if small, and make it a habit to stand for two rak'ahs at night.
  4. Before you open your mouth, think — is there any benefit in these words, for the religion or for this world? If not, stay silent.
