The Evil Eye and Hasad Are Not the Same Thing
Shaykh Bali first pointed out the difference, and then gave the complete treatment — protection, remedy, and keeping yourself in check.

Shaykh Bali first pointed out the difference, and then gave the complete treatment — protection, remedy, and keeping yourself in check.
Where the Difference Lies
Hasad means wishing for another person's blessing to be gone — seeing a classmate's good result and wanting him to fail, wishing loss upon a competitor. This is an objection to Allah's distribution itself.
The evil eye is different — it is gazing in admiration and forgetting to pray for barakah. So even a righteous person can unintentionally cast the evil eye — even on his own child, his own car, his own shop.
- A well-running business suddenly in loss
- A leading student's results suddenly collapsing
- A sudden reversal of circumstances for no reason
The Shaykh also warns — do not go to extremes. If you keep saying "evil eye, hasad" about everything that happens, life itself turns bitter and it only creates mental distress. Keep the matter balanced.
The Shaykh's Answer
The most effective treatment is Surah Al-Fatihah and the Mu'awwidhat — the Shaykh says, we have tested it many times.
Place your hand on your head and, with certainty, recite Al-Fatihah, Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas — two or three times a day. And place your hand on the place of pain, say "Bismillah" three times, then say seven times "A'udhu bi'izzatillahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa uhadhir".
This does not mean giving up medical treatment — the Shaykh clearly says, get treatment too, along with ruqyah shar'iyyah. And if bathwater is requested from you, give it. (Sahih Muslim 2188)
Evidence — Hasad Is Mentioned in the Surah of Refuge Itself
وَمِن شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ
And from the evil of an envier when he envies." (Surah Al-Falaq 113:5 — Saheeh International)
The Prophet ﷺ used to protect Hasan and Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them) every day with this dua — "A'udhu bikalimatillahit tammah, min kulli shaytanin wa hammah, wa min kulli 'aynin lammah". (Sahih Bukhari)
What to Do
- Whenever you are impressed, say "Allahumma barik" — the Prophet ﷺ said, why did you not pray for barakah?
- Keep blessings out of sight — there is no need to spread pictures of your car, house or children.
- Recite Al-Fatihah and the Mu'awwidhat morning and evening, and keep up the morning and evening adhkar as well.
- Touching wood or "five fingers in your eye" — these are mere superstitions, so leave them.
