Shaykh Bali says, Allah has divided people into two groups — the grateful and the ungrateful. There is no third group.

Where These Words Make One Tremble

Imam Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) used to say — Allah lets whomever He wills enjoy a blessing; but if its shukr is not offered, He turns that very blessing into a punishment.

He gave you children — without shukr, the children themselves become a cause of hardship. He gave you a wife, He gave you wealth — without shukr, these very things sit heavily upon you as a burden.

That is why in earlier times shukr was called “the protector and the attractor” — it protects what you have, and draws in what you do not have.

The Prophet ﷺ used to stand in prayer at night until his feet became swollen. When he was asked, he would say — Should I not wish to be a grateful servant?

The Shaykh's Answer

Shukr shows itself in three places — on the tongue, in the heart, and in the limbs.

Ibn al-Qayyim's (may Allah have mercy on him) definition: Shukr is for the mark of Allah's blessing to appear on the servant — on the tongue as praise and acknowledgment, in the heart as witnessing and love, and in the limbs as obedience.

You cannot regard your eyes as a blessing and yet look at what is haram. And the shukr of the morning is two rak'ahs of Salat ad-Duha; the scholars call it the zakah of the limbs.

The Evidence — Shukr Increases Blessings

And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'" (Surah Ibrahim 14:7 — Saheeh International)

The Prophet ﷺ said — Allah is pleased with His servant when he eats a morsel and praises Him for it, and drinks a sip of water and praises Him for it. (Sahih Muslim)

What to Do

  1. Do not look upward, look downward — only then will blessings not seem small.
  2. Recite after every salah: “Allahumma a'inni 'ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibadatik.”
  3. Take a piece of paper and write down your blessings — you will remember many things you had forgotten.
  4. When good news comes, perform sujud ash-shukr; and be content with what is written for you.
