How to Stay With Allah All the Time

Shaykh Bali speaks of three states — either in dhikr, or in shukr, or else in sabr. Beyond these three, a servant has no other moment.

Shaykh Bali speaks of three states — either in dhikr, or in shukr, or else in sabr. Beyond these three, a servant has no other moment.

The Scene

Two people are walking along the same road. One is silent, while the other is moving his tongue, reciting tasbih as he goes.

By the time they reach their destination, the second person may have completed 300 tasbih — ten rewards for each one. The first person's bag is empty.

The Shaykh says — if ten taka were given in exchange for each tasbih, we would not miss a single one. When we hear of ten rewards, how many of us show any interest?

On the Day of Judgment, the heedless will see the reward of those who made dhikr and say — alas, this was the easiest thing for us.

The Shaykh's Answer

Make plenty of dhikr — Allah says, when My servant remembers Me, I am with him.

The Shaykh says, the best dhikr is the recitation of the Qur'an — recite whatever you have memorized as you walk and go about, especially Surah Al-Fatihah. Or else, Subhanallah, Alhamdulillah, La ilaha illallah, Allahu Akbar.

Praise Allah when you sit down to eat, and be patient in hardship — when Allah loves someone, He puts them to the test. Even then, you are with Him.

The Evidence — "I am with him"

أَنَا عِنْدَ ظَنِّ عَبْدِي بِي وَأَنَا مَعَهُ إِذَا ذَكَرَنِي

Allah says: I am as My servant thinks of Me, and I am with him when he remembers Me. (Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)

The Shaykh reminds us — the very last hadith of Sahih Bukhari is those two phrases: light on the tongue, heavy on the scale, beloved to the Most Merciful — Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi, Subhanallahil 'Azim.

What to Do

  1. Keep your tongue moving as you go along — a Surah you have memorized, or else tasbih and tahlil.
  2. Every day, recite Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi, Subhanallahil 'Azim often.
  3. Say Alhamdulillah after eating and drinking — shukr too is being with Allah.
  4. When hardship comes, understand that it is a test — with patience, your ranks are raised, not lost.
