The taste of closeness is hidden in sujud

Shaykh Bali says — when these moments descend into the heart, the heart is illuminated and the chest is opened wide. And their address is only one: sujud.

Shaykh Bali says — when these moments descend into the heart, the heart is illuminated and the chest is opened wide. And their address is only one: sujud.

The preparation begins with the adhan

When we are called to meet some great person of this world, we get our body and mind fully in order. Yet when the call is from the Master — “Hayya alas-salah”?

The Shaykh says, the first thing to do — answer the adhan from the heart. Proclaiming the takbir by saying Allahu Akbar, bearing witness to tawhid by saying the shahadah, and saying “La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah”.

Then wudu — reminding yourself of inner purity through outer purity. With the washing of the hands, the sins of the hands fall away, and with the washing of the face, the sins of the eyes.

After that, every step on the way to the masjid — the angels are writing down good deeds and erasing sins.

The Shaykh's answer

A servant is closest to his Lord when in sujud — so place all your requests there.

When you say the takbir, remember — you are standing before the “Akbar”; so it does not befit you to be busy with anything smaller than Him. The world, job, children, crisis — all are small, and the solution too is in His hands alone.

If the heart prostrates along with the forehead, then even after you stand up, the heart remains in sujud — and that then shows in your humility.

Evidence — the closest moment

أَقْرَبُ مَا يَكُونُ الْعَبْدُ مِنْ رَبِّهِ وَهُوَ سَاجِدٌ فَأَكْثِرُوا الدُّعَاءَ

A servant is closest to his Lord when he is in sujud; so make plenty of dua. (Sahih Muslim 482)

Allah says — “Prostrate and draw near.” (Surah Al-Alaq, verse 19) The Shaykh's caution: making a separate sujud outside salah for dua is a bid'ah; more sujud means more salah.

What to do

  1. When you hear the adhan, answer from the heart, recite salawat upon the Prophet, and ask for the wasilah.
  2. Do not rush the wudu — do it with the intention of washing the inside as well.
  3. In sujud, say all your requests for this world and the Hereafter; to increase your voluntary sujud, increase your voluntary salah.

This 120-day series ends here. Thank you so much for staying with us all this time. May Allah accept the sujud of all of us, and grant us His closeness.
