Five Forms of Abandoning the Qur'an

Shaykh Bali says that merely having a mushaf in the house does not protect us from "abandoning" it — abandonment has several forms, and one of them almost no one notices.

Shaykh Bali says that merely having a mushaf in the house does not protect us from "abandoning" it — abandonment has several forms, and one of them almost no one notices.

The Forms of Abandonment

  • Abandoning by listening — when the Qur'an is played, I look for songs or TV serials instead
  • Abandoning by recitation — two or three days go by and not a single verse (ayah) is recited
  • Abandoning by practice — the verses are memorized, but there is no trace of them in life
  • Abandoning by judgment — settling disputes by custom and tradition instead of the Shariah
  • Abandoning by seeking shifa — when ill, the Qur'an is not even recited over oneself

On the Day of Judgment the Prophet ﷺ will say: O my Lord, my people had abandoned this Qur'an. (Surah Al-Furqan, verse (ayah) 30)

The Shaykh's Answer

See the Qur'an as a letter sent by Allah — would anyone leave a letter from a loved one lying unread?

The Shaykh says the most neglected form is not seeking shifa through the Qur'an. A headache, a stomachache, any illness — place your hand on the place of pain and recite Surah Al-Fatihah and the Mu'awwidhat.

See a doctor and take medicine too — but know that medicine does not give shifa by itself; shifa comes only when Allah wills. Make dua while taking medicine as well.

Evidence — shifa is in the Qur'an itself

And We send down of the Qur’ān that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss. (Surah Al-Israa 17:82 — Saheeh International)

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said that when the Prophet ﷺ fell ill, he would recite the Mu'awwidhat, blow into his hands, and then wipe them over his body. The Shaykh says — the treatment for both the illnesses of the body and the illnesses of the heart is in the Qur'an.

What to Do

  1. Set a recitation routine — the Shaykh says, no more than forty days for a complete reading.
  2. Keep a tafsir in the house; at least one day a week, read it with your children.
  3. In hardship or illness, place your hand on the place of pain and recite Al-Fatihah and the Mu'awwidhat.
  4. If you forget a memorized portion, make istighfar and begin reciting it again in salah.
