What to Do at Home on the Day of Arafah

Shaykh Bali says — while the pilgrims are busy with the talbiyah and dua at Arafah, you too, sitting in your own home, become busy with dua and weeping.

Shaykh Bali says — while the pilgrims are busy with the talbiyah and dua at Arafah, you too, sitting in your own home, become busy with dua and weeping.

What the Day Is Like

The Day of Arafah — a day when earth and sky seem to meet. One call from hundreds of thousands of voices: Labbaik Allahumma labbaik.

The Shaykh says that on this day Allah boasts about His servants before the angels — dusty, with disheveled hair, they have come from far and distant lands, hoping for My mercy.

And on that day Iblis throws dust on his head — all that he had built throughout the year falls apart in a single moment of forgiveness.

But this year, Hajj has not been written in your fate or mine. So what shall we do?

The Shaykh's Answer

Unless you are ill or have a valid excuse, keep the fast of Arafah — and fill the whole day with dua.

The Shaykh says, on this day make abundant recitation, dhikr, sadaqah (charity) and tearful dua. Ask Allah for whatever you want — do not consider any request too great, for He is Vast and Merciful.

Especially, spend the time from after Asr until Maghrib in dua — just as the pilgrims keep making dua at Arafah.

Evidence — The Fast of Arafah

The fast of the Day of Arafah — I hope from Allah that it will erase the sins of the previous year and the following year. (Sahih Muslim 1162)

The Prophet ﷺ said that the dua of three is not turned away — the traveler, the fasting person until he breaks his fast, and a father's dua for his child. The Shaykh says that the narration which comes with the words "at the moment of breaking the fast" is weak.

What to Do

  1. If you have no excuse, keep the fast of Arafah — the whole day is your time for dua.
  2. Fill the day with recitation, dhikr and sadaqah (charity).
  3. From Asr to Maghrib — keep making dua with your hands raised, in humility.
  4. Ask for big things; make dua for yourself, your family and the Ummah.
