The Knife Was Held to His Own Heart

Shaykh Bali says, the test was for both of them — for the father in his patience, and for the son in his submission. Which was more astonishing is hard to say.

Shaykh Bali says, the test was for both of them — for the father in his patience, and for the son in his submission. Which was more astonishing is hard to say.

How the Tests Came

One test after another. Thrown into the fire — he passed. Standing before the greatest ruler of the age — he passed. Childless for many long years — he was patient.

Then a child came. Before the love had even had time to grow, came the command — leave him in the desert. He did that too.

When the son reached the age of walking with his father, the hardest one came — he saw in a dream that he was slaughtering his son. And the dreams of the prophets are revelation.

He took his son far away — away from those he knew, away from his mother — and then he spoke the matter.

The Shaykh's Explanation

The son's reply — 'My father, do what you are commanded.'

Shaykh Bali points out a subtle detail — the father did not say 'I have been commanded to slaughter you'; he said 'I see in a dream.' Yet the son did not say 'do what you saw in the dream' — he said 'do what you are commanded.'

Because Ismail (peace be upon him) had understood that this was the command of Allah Himself — coming in the form of a dream so that it would be easier for his father. The incident is mentioned in detail in Surah As-Saffat.

The Evidence — One Who Surrenders Himself

Yes, [on the contrary], whoever submits his face [i.e., self] in Islām to Allāh while being a doer of good will have his reward with his Lord. And no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve. (Surah Al-Baqara 2:112 — Saheeh International)

The knife did not cut. Allah called out and said — you have fulfilled the dream. Then Ismail (peace be upon him) was ransomed with a great sacrifice. Both passed the test.

What to Do

  1. You have not been asked to slaughter a child — you have been told to slaughter the desires of the self.
  2. Rise in the last part of the night and pray two rak'ahs — this is your test.
  3. Fast one day for the sake of Allah, and give sadaqah from your own wealth.
  4. Stand in the first row in the obligatory salah — that is, become a servant who has surrendered.
