Victory Comes with Sabr

Fire, rulers, childless years, a dry desert — through it all, one message: help comes with sabr.

Fire, rulers, childless years, a dry desert — through it all, one message: help comes with sabr.

How the Final Scene Was

In his old age, three guests came. Ibrahim (peace be upon him) — who was called "the father of guests" — happily brought a roasted calf and placed it before them.

They did not eat. Ibrahim (peace be upon him) felt fearful in his heart. Then they told him — we are not men, we are angels; our journey is toward the people of Lut.

Sarah (peace be upon her) was listening from behind the door. She was given good news — a son would be born, named Ishaq, who would be a prophet; and she would also live to see his son Yaqub.

She was astonished — at this age? The reply came: Are you amazed at the command of Allah?

The Shaykh's Explanation

Shaykh Bali says — help comes with sabr. Be patient, and Allah will help you.

The second lesson — Allah has power over all things. The blazing fire could not burn Ibrahim (peace be upon him); water gushed forth in the dry desert. So when poverty, illness or debt comes, understand — this is the time for your sabr to be seen.

The third lesson — standing firm upon the truth; he stood firm before the ruler and before his own tribe. The fourth lesson — relying on Allah; he left his wife and child in an uninhabited desert, and Allah protected them.

Evidence — His command is only "Be"

إِنَّمَآ أَمْرُهُۥٓ إِذَآ أَرَادَ شَيْـًٔا أَن يَقُولَ لَهُۥ كُن فَيَكُونُ

His command is only when He intends a thing that He says to it, "Be," and it is. (Surah Yaseen 36:82 — Saheeh International)

فَإِنَّ مَعَ ٱلْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا

And indeed, with hardship comes ease. (Surah Ash-Sharh, verse 5)

What to Do

  1. Do not give up in hard times — help comes down right after sabr.
  2. If you are on the truth, do not retreat and do not become weak — Allah is with you.
  3. Place your reliance on Allah, and hold on to the means as well — both together.
  4. Keep up the night prayer, fasting, Qur'an recitation and dhikr.
