‘Has Allah commanded this?’
The answer was a single word — ‘Yes.’ Then Hajar (peace be upon her) said, “Then Allah will not let us be destroyed.”

The answer was a single word — ‘Yes.’ Then Hajar (peace be upon her) said, “Then Allah will not let us be destroyed.”
How the scene was
After Ismail was born, by Allah's command Ibrahim (peace be upon him) took Hajar and the infant to the desert of Makkah — where there was no person and no companion.
They had a little dates and one waterskin of water. He left the two of them in the shade of a large tree, then took the road back, and did not look behind him.
Hajar (peace be upon her) called out — “Are you leaving us here?” There was no answer. Then she asked — “Has Allah commanded you to do this?”
Ibrahim (peace be upon him) said — “Yes.” She said, “Then He will not let us be destroyed.”
The Shaykh's explanation
Shaykh Bali says — this is what faith should be like: trust that looks not at the situation, but at Allah.
After going some distance, to where they could no longer see them, Ibrahim (peace be upon him) raised his hands and made dua — My Lord, I have settled one of my descendants in a barren valley beside Your sacred House. (Surah Ibrahim, verse 37)
The water ran out. The mother ran between Safa and Marwa, but found no one. Then, right beside the infant, Zamzam came blowing out through the ground — and a deserted valley became a city of people.
Evidence — whoever relies on Allah
وَمَن يَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَهُوَ حَسْبُهُۥٓ
And will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allāh - then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allāh will accomplish His purpose. Allāh has already set for everything a [decreed] extent. (Surah At-Talaaq 65:3 — Saheeh International; meaning of the complete verse)
The incident is narrated in detail in Sahih Bukhari. Shaykh Bali says — that one sentence of Hajar (peace be upon her) is the whole lesson of tawakkul: where Allah's command is, there is no destruction.
What to do
- First see whether the task is Allah's command or not — if it is, worry about the outcome lessens.
- Tawakkul does not mean sitting with folded hands — she ran, and then the water came.
- In hard times, keep holding on to dua — for your children, for your home, for your provision.
- When you feel alone, remember — whomever Allah keeps, no one can make him lost.
