Taweez — Is It Permissible, and What Is the Alternative

Is it permissible to use a taweez, which taweez is clearly shirk, where the scholars differ, and what the Shariah-compliant alternative to a taweez is.

Tying a taweez around the neck or on the arm to be protected from illness, hardship or the evil eye is very widespread in our society. The question is not a simple one — because not every taweez is the same, and the scholars' position is not the same on every kind of case.

The taweez on which there is no disagreement

There is no disagreement among the scholars about using a taweez made of things outside the Qur'an and the Sunnah — unclear words, number grids, symbols, names of jinn, writing in an unfamiliar language; these are forbidden, and in many cases shirk.

Because here the power to remove harm is being attributed to something to which Allah has not given that power. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said — "Whoever hangs a taweez has committed shirk." (Musnad Ahmad)

And a taweez in which the help of jinn is sought, or which is taken from a magician, is even more serious.

Where there is disagreement

There is disagreement among the Companions and later scholars about a taweez made by writing only verses of the Qur'an and hanging it. Some have permitted it; however, many, including Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), and many contemporary scholars have forbidden this too — mainly for three reasons:

  1. The hadiths of prohibition are general, and no exception is mentioned
  2. Permitting it opens the door — ordinary people cannot tell a Qur'anic taweez from a non-Qur'anic one, and magicians exploit exactly this gap
  3. Protecting the honor of the Qur'an — a taweez goes along even into impure places

So caution demands avoiding the taweez, especially when a simple and safe alternative is right at hand.

The Shariah-compliant alternative — what the Prophet ﷺ himself did

What to do instead of a taweez:

  • Recitation — recite Surah Al-Fatihah, Ayat al-Kursi and the last three surahs over yourself, blow into your hands, and wipe them over your body
  • Recited-over water — recite verses, blow into the water, and drink it and bathe with it
  • Keep up the morning and evening adhkar regularly
  • Recite or play Surah Al-Baqarah in the home

The difference is fundamental: a taweez is reliance on an object, while ruqyah is asking Allah directly. With the first there is a danger that your reliance shifts to the wrong place; with the second there is not.

What to do if you are wearing a taweez

Take it off and destroy it. There is nothing to fear in this — both harm and shifa are in Allah's hand, not in the hand of any object. After that, begin ruqyah regularly.
