Shaykh Bali says — good character raises a person to the rank of the one who fasts and the one who stands in worship at night. Yet this is exactly where we are the most heedless.
How the Disease Shows Itself
One person speaks harshly, in a stern voice — and thinks this is a strong personality.
A person in charge finds fault all the time and scolds, thinking this makes the work better. The Shaykh says this only breeds despair in people's hearts.
Sitting in a gathering, someone mocks another person, and everyone laughs. The Shaykh says — looking down on anyone is itself a sign of kibr.
And the most dangerous of all — becoming a muflis: they come with salah, fasting and sadaqah, yet have to give away all their good deeds to those whom they had hurt.
The Shaykh's Answer
The Prophet ﷺ said — through good character a person attains the rank of one who fasts and prays through the night.
Why? The Shaykh says — the one who fasts struggles against his nafs over food, the one who stays up at night struggles against sleep; but the one who behaves well struggles by putting up with people of all different natures.
What to do when anger rises: if you are standing, sit down; if you are sitting, lie down; if you can, get up and perform wudu. And stay silent — when angry, mistakes are closest at hand.
Evidence — the Heaviest Thing on the Scale
مَا مِنْ شَيْءٍ أَثْقَلُ فِي الْمِيزَانِ مِنْ حُسْنِ الْخُلُقِ
There is nothing heavier on the Scale than good character. (Sunan Abu Dawud — sahih chain)
The Shaykh also warns about kibr — the Prophet ﷺ said, whoever has an atom's weight of arrogance in his heart will not enter Paradise (Sahih Muslim).
What to Do
- When anger comes, change your position — sit, lie down, or get up and perform wudu.
- Before pointing out a mistake, mention the good first — the same rule applies with your children and your colleagues.
- Do not look down on anyone — many surprises are waiting on the Day of Judgment.
- Make this dua: Allahumma ati nafsi taqwaha wa zakkiha — You alone are the best of those who purify.
