Are all products on the boycott list?

Shaykh Bali's answer is straightforward — no, not everything is subject to the boycott. The boycott is specific, and it has a clear criterion.

Shaykh Bali's answer is straightforward — no, not everything is subject to the boycott. The boycott is specific, and it has a clear criterion.

How the question comes up

A brother works at a grocery shop — the shop is not his own.

The owner stocks products from certain companies that are alleged to help the enemies against Muslims.

He has explained this to the owner more than once. The owner's reply — Everything is on the boycott list, so what will the shop run on?

So the question is twofold — what exactly is the limit of the boycott?

The Shaykh's answer

The Shaykh says — not everything is subject to the boycott, not in the way that man is putting it.

The boycott is for those companies about which it has been proven that they are helping the enemies in the war against Muslims. Those products should be avoided, so that we too have no share in that help.

As for companies that are not involved in this help — even if they are non-Muslim companies — there is no harm in dealing with them. This was all the Shaykh's answer; he did not explain here in detail the separate ruling on employment and income.

Evidence — a Muslim is the brother of a Muslim

الْمُسْلِمُ أَخُو الْمُسْلِمِ، لَا يَظْلِمُهُ وَلَا يُسْلِمُهُ

A Muslim is the brother of a Muslim. He does not wrong him, and he does not hand him over to the enemy. (Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)

The Qur'anic principle is the same — cooperate in righteousness and piety, not in sin and transgression (Surah Al-Ma'idah, verse 2). Boycotting is an application of this very principle.

What to do

  1. Drop the blanket claim that "everything is boycotted"; the Shaykh has rejected it.
  2. Boycott only those companies about which there is proof.
  3. Do not decide based on rumors or vague lists — verify first, and only then decide.
  4. To learn the specific ruling for your own job or income, speak with a trustworthy scholar.
