Improper hijab is not just a matter of clothing
Shaykh Bali gave the definition of tabarruj in a single line — and it covers clothing, walking, laughter and speech.

Shaykh Bali gave the definition of tabarruj in a single line — and it covers clothing, walking, laughter and speech.
What is tabarruj
The Shaykh's definition — a woman displaying, in front of a non-mahram man, something that the Shariah has not permitted to be displayed.
This includes adornment, the body, the manner of walking, laughter and the way of speaking — all of it.
The body is covered, yet the clothing is so tight that the shape stands out — the Shaykh says this too is a form of tabarruj.
Many say, "But the girl is well-mannered." The Shaykh's reply — good manners are one thing, and the ruling of the Shariah is another.
The Shaykh's reply
The Shaykh says — hijab is an obligation just like salah, not a matter of taste or preference.
But an obligation cannot simply be imposed all of a sudden. The Shaykh's emphasis is on tarbiyah — accustom your daughter to hijab from a young age, just as children are trained in salah from the age of seven.
Otherwise, if pressure is suddenly applied at twelve or thirteen, the girl becomes irritated — because she was never accustomed to it. And no blaming; the advice must be given with wisdom and good counsel.
The evidence — the warning of the Prophet ﷺ
Two types of the people of Hellfire whom I have not yet seen... women who are clothed yet naked, who walk crookedly and cause others to lean, their heads like the leaning humps of camels. (Sahih Muslim)
The scholars explain — being clothed yet naked means covering some parts of the body while leaving others uncovered, or wearing tight or thin clothing in which the shape stands out.
What to do
- Accustom your daughter to modest clothing from a young age — not sudden pressure.
- Explain to the people of your household with wisdom and good counsel; not with taunts or by shaming them.
- Provision and marriage are written in the qadar — there is no need to give up modesty out of fear of this.
- Strengthen your relationship with Allah — let the change come from within.
