The Five Conditions of the Correct Hijab

Shaykh Bali counted the conditions one by one. Many people overlook the last condition — yet it too has come clearly in the hadith.

Shaykh Bali counted the conditions one by one. Many people overlook the last condition — yet it too has come clearly in the hadith.

Beginning with Good News

The Shaykh begins with the honor of raising girls. Imam Ahmad narrated with a hasan chain — whoever has three daughters and patiently feeds and clothes them, they will be a shield for him from the Hellfire on the Day of Resurrection.

Ibn Majah also narrated with a hasan chain — whoever has two daughters and treats them well, they will take him to Paradise.

The Shaykh says, part of treating them well is to command her to do what brings her closer to her Lord — salah, fasting and the Shar'i hijab.

So what exactly is the correct Shar'i hijab like?

The Shaykh's Answer

The conditions the Shaykh counted — covering, not itself an adornment, not thin, loose, and free of perfume.

One: It must cover the whole body. Two: The garment itself must not be an adornment — no showy embroidery or patterns; a single plain color is better. Three: It must be thick, not so thin that what is underneath shows through.

Four: It must be loose and wide, not like trousers or a tight skirt. Five: She must not go out past men wearing perfume — on this there is a hasan sahih narration in Tirmidhi.

Evidence — the headscarf over the chest

And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment [i.e., beauty] except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess [i.e., slaves], or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allāh in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed. (Surah An-Noor 24:31 — Saheeh International; meaning of the complete verse)

Scholars have two opinions regarding the face and hands. Shaykh Bali gives preference to the opinion of covering them — based on the hadith "Al-mar'atu 'awrah" (Sunan at-Tirmidhi — hasan sahih).

What to Do

  1. Check whether the garment is loose and thick — the shape of the body should not be discernible.
  2. Make sure the hijab does not itself become an adornment — avoid showy patterns.
  3. No perfume when going outside; all of your adornment is for the home, for your husband.
  4. Accustom your daughter from a young age — not by force, but with love and patience.
