Worry at night, humiliation by day

This is how Shaykh Bali described debt. And he laid out the way to freedom from it in three steps — dua, intention and thrift.
How the question comes
Taking a loan is permissible — the Shaykh says on two conditions: out of genuine need, and with the intention to repay.
The trouble begins elsewhere — you already have a car and your work is running; you simply see the neighbor's new car and take a loan to buy another.
On the other hand, for the one who gives a loan, the Shaykh has given great good news — for as long as the debt remains, it is as if an equal amount of sadaqah is given every day; and if he grants extra time after the due date, it is doubled.
So what should someone do whose debt has piled up on his shoulders?
The Shaykh's answer
If a believer dies leaving a debt, his soul is held back because of the debt — until it is paid off.
So the Shaykh's remedy has three steps. One — asking Allah for help; getting up in the last third of the night and making dua with certainty. Two — keeping a sincere intention to repay. Three — being thrifty in household spending, so that the money accumulates.
And the one who has given the loan? He must give time to the one in hardship, not file a lawsuit — Allah has said that if the debtor is in hardship, give him respite until ease comes (Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 280).
Evidence — the dua for freedom from debt
اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِحَلَالِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ، وَأَغْنِنِي بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ
O Allah! Suffice me with what You have made lawful instead of what You have made unlawful, and by Your grace make me independent of everyone other than You. (Sunan at-Tirmidhi — hasan)
The Prophet ﷺ said — Whoever takes people's wealth intending to repay it, Allah will repay it on his behalf; and whoever takes it intending to destroy it, Allah will destroy him. (Sahih al-Bukhari)
What to do
- Get up in the last third of the night and make dua — it is in sujud that a servant is closest to his Lord.
- Keep your intention to repay firm; repay as soon as you are able.
- Be thrifty in household spending — and explain it to your family as well.
- If you have given a loan, give time to the one in hardship; do not take a blank cheque or a signature on blank paper.
