What about the parlour and wedding hall business?

Shaykh Bali did not simply stop at saying “haram.” He showed which conditions keep the business lawful, and where it gets spoiled.

Shaykh Bali did not simply stop at saying “haram.” He showed which conditions keep the business lawful, and where it gets spoiled.

How the question comes

One sister works in a beauty parlour. Another rents out a wedding hall. Both ask the same question — is this income halal?

People around say, business is just business; what happens inside is not my responsibility.

On the other hand, some people issue a blanket ruling — it is all haram, give it up. In the middle, the person is left bewildered.

Shaykh Bali took the two businesses separately — what is the original ruling, and what are the conditions?

The Shaykh's answer

The work is originally permissible — it becomes haram only when something haram enters it.

Parlour work is permissible, as long as no haram is mixed into it. The Shaykh's conditions are two — it must not involve forbidden acts such as eyebrow plucking (namas) or facial tattooing; and the adornment must be for the husband.

If you know that she will go before men with this very adornment — then the Shaykh says, you have become a partner in sin and transgression.

Evidence — the command to lower the gaze

وَقُل لِّلْمُؤْمِنَٰتِ يَغْضُضْنَ مِنْ أَبْصَٰرِهِنَّ وَيَحْفَظْنَ فُرُوجَهُنَّ

And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment [i.e., beauty] except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess [i.e., slaves], or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allāh in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed. (Surah An-Noor 24:31 — Saheeh International; meaning of the complete verse)

The original ruling for a wedding hall is also permissible — if men and women are separate and there is no music or other sin. If men and women mix together, the Shaykh says, that income is no longer halal.

What to do

  1. Stay completely away from eyebrow plucking (namas) and facial tattooing.
  2. The adornment should be for the husband; if you know she will go before men, do not touch up her look.
  3. Keep separate entrances for men and women in the hall — the groom with the men, the bride with the women.
  4. Keep music off; if the conditions cannot be met, the Shaykh's advice is — it is better not to do this business.
