Shaykh Bali pointed out several doors through which haram enters — yet people do not even notice.

Where the Doors Are

The Shaykh says that haram does not always come in the form of a major crime. Most of the time it enters through small habits.

  • A doctor sends patients to a particular lab — because a commission comes from there
  • A craftsman buys materials only from a particular shop, with his share built into the price
  • An employee stays absent, yet has his attendance recorded and takes the full salary
  • A teacher spends class time on the phone
  • The bank says "fee" instead of "interest" — the name changes, not the thing

The Shaykh's Answer

Seeking halal is obligatory upon every man and woman — and by Allah's grace, the halal is vast and the haram is limited.

The Shaykh says that riba is of two kinds. Riba an-nasi'ah — an increase taken in exchange for delay; today's interest-based banks, and "give me more time, I will pay more" when someone cannot pay an installment — both fall under this.

Riba al-fadl — exchanging things of the same kind in unequal amounts. So if you need to exchange old gold, first sell it and receive its price, then buy new gold in a separate transaction. And the commission of a doctor or craftsman — which is worked into the patient's or customer's bill — is also haram.

Evidence — the impure and the pure are not equal

Say, "Not equal are the evil and the good, although the abundance of evil might impress you." So fear Allāh, O you of understanding, that you may be successful. (Surah Al-Maaida 5:100 — Saheeh International)

لَعَنَ اللَّهُ الرَّاشِيَ وَالْمُرْتَشِيَ

Allah has cursed the one who gives a bribe and the one who takes it. (Sunan Abi Dawud and Tirmidhi; the hadith is sahih)

What to Do

  1. Make sincere repentance — the Shaykh says repentance wipes out everything before it.
  2. Let go of the haram money — if you know its owner, return it to him.
  3. If the owner is unknown, give the money away as sadaqah — do not enjoy it yourself.
  4. Make dua day and night — for halal provision, and for barakah in it.
