Wealth: A Blessing or a Test?

At the very start of the khutbah, Sheikh Bali reminded us: this world is the house of testing. The wise one is the one who makes this world a field for the Hereafter.

At the very start of the khutbah, Sheikh Bali reminded us: this world is the house of testing. The wise one is the one who makes this world a field for the Hereafter.

How the Question Comes

When money comes, the calculations of life change. Some say wealth is a gift from Allah; others say wealth is what ruins people.

Even among the scholars there is an old question: who is better, the patient poor person or the grateful rich person? The Sheikh says that many scholars have given preference to the grateful rich person.

And in the midst of this debate, the real tests quietly pass by: the adhan is called while the shop is open, or the day comes when the inheritance is to be divided.

In the Friday khutbah, Sheikh Bali brought both of these to the fore.

The Sheikh's Answer

The preference of many scholars: the grateful rich person is better than the patient poor person; but if the poor person is patient, he too has a full reward.

Because the rich person can perform some acts of worship that the poor person cannot: performing Hajj and Umrah with wealth, spending in the way of Allah, building mosques, taking responsibility for orphans.

Then the Sheikh pointed out the two tests. When dividing an inheritance, do not alter the rights set by the Shariah in order to please someone; writing everything in the sons' names and leaving out the daughters is extremely dangerous. And when the adhan is called at work, closing the shop and going to salah is proof of the strength of one's faith.

The Evidence: What to Do with What You Have Been Given

But seek, through that which Allāh has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allāh has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allāh does not like corrupters." (Surah Al-Qasas 28:77 — Saheeh International)

The Sheikh says: this land, this shop, everything must be left behind; you will go to the grave alone. Use what is in your hands today to find your house in the Hereafter.

What to Do

  1. When the adhan is called, stop work; close the shop and go to the congregation. This is the test of faith.
  2. In inheritance, show no favoritism to anyone; divide it just as Allah has divided it.
  3. Use your wealth for amal that cannot be done without money: Hajj, sadaqah, taking responsibility for orphans.
  4. Give shukr for what you have received; shukr is the cause of increase.
