What Is the Shar'i Solution to Poverty?

Right at the start, Shaykh Bali broke down the misconception — rizq does not mean only money. Good health is rizq, a child's good conduct is rizq, and the ability to pray Fajr is also rizq.

Right at the start, Shaykh Bali broke down the misconception — rizq does not mean only money. Good health is rizq, a child's good conduct is rizq, and the ability to pray Fajr is also rizq.

How the Question Comes

The Shaykh says that many people consider themselves poor — when in fact they are not poor. So the two words first need to be made clear.

The faqir is the one who does not get even half of what he needs. And the miskin is the one who gets more than half, but his need is still not fully met. Someone can even be a miskin while holding a job.

Poverty is also relative. In some places a car is a luxury; in others, needs cannot be met at all without a car — there, it is a basic necessity.

So the question is — What is the shar'i solution to this problem?

The Shaykh's Answer

The mistake is confining rizq to money — good health, a wife's love, a child's good conduct, peace in the heart, the ability to engage in recitation — all of it is rizq.

The solution has two foundations — taking the means, and placing your reliance on Allah. The Shaykh pointed to verse 15 of Surah Al-Mulk: walk about on the earth and eat of His rizq — note that it does not say "from your effort."

Then he mentioned, one by one, the causes of expanded rizq — establishing salah, taqwa, abundant istighfar, maintaining family ties, sadaqah and gratitude. And he strongly forbade stretching out one's hand to people.

Evidence — Salah and Rizq

And enjoin prayer upon your family [and people] and be steadfast therein. We ask you not for provision; We provide for you, and the [best] outcome is for [those of] righteousness. (Surah Taa-Haa 20:132 — Saheeh International)

The Prophet ﷺ said — no one has ever eaten better food than that which he eats from the earnings of his own hand; the Prophet of Allah, Dawud (peace be upon him), used to eat from the earnings of his own hand. (Sahih Bukhari) Although he was a king, he did not touch the state treasury.

What to Do

  1. Take the means of halal earning — a job, business, farming, a skilled trade; and do the work with care.
  2. Establish the five daily prayers on time — the Shaykh says this is the great door of rizq.
  3. Do not give up taqwa, abundant istighfar, family ties and sadaqah.
  4. Do not make a habit of stretching out your hand to people; if you need something, ask Allah alone.
