Shaykh Bali tells young huffaz, boys and girls: memorizing the Qur'an is a blessing given by Allah; and the way to give thanks for this blessing is amal (practice).

Who This Is For

The day a hifz is completed feels like a festival. Sweets are distributed, photos are taken, and everyone places a hand on the child's head.

Then a few months go by. No one asks anymore: is the Qur'an still with you? Is it being recited in the night prayer?

And one day someone gets angry and says a harsh word. The people around fall silent and watch — let us see what the hafiz does now.

Shaykh Bali offered a few pieces of advice to his young huffaz, boys and girls, on exactly these points.

The Shaykh's Advice

Memorizing the Qur'an is a blessing from Allah, and the way to give thanks for this blessing is to put it into amal (practice) accordingly.

The Shaykh says: stay up at night with the Qur'an, take the manners of the Qur'an into yourself, and teach the Qur'an to others. For the zakah of knowledge is to pass it on; just as the wealthy will be questioned about their wealth, the scholar and the hafiz will likewise be questioned about knowledge.

Be a role model for those who have not memorized. If someone speaks harshly in anger, stay silent, or else say: May Allah forgive you. Here the Shaykh also brings an incident about Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), but he himself has stated that the narration has a weakness.

Evidence — Where Allah's Pleasure Lies

And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, "My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small." (Surah Al-Israa 17:24 — Saheeh International)

The Shaykh's final advice — every day ask your parents: "Are you pleased with me today?" There is no comparison to what this one sentence does in the heart of a father and mother.

What to Do

  1. Make what you have memorized your amal (practice) — this is where the thankfulness lies.
  2. Recite the Qur'an in the night qiyam; bring the manners of the Qur'an into your own conduct.
  3. Teach others — knowledge is not something to hold back; its zakah is to pass it on.
  4. Ask your parents for dua every day, and ask them about their pleasure.
