The Sin That Holds You Back on the Pulsirat

Shaykh Bali says — those hooks are in fact the servant's sins. The hook of backbiting clings to the one who backbites.

How the Scene Unfolds

The Sirat is set over Hell. On that day no one will speak, except the messengers, who will say — Ya Rabb, salim salim.

People will cross according to their deeds — some will fly across, some at the speed of a horse, some will walk, and some will crawl.

Crossing the Sirat does not mean Paradise right away — next comes the Qantara, the bridge between Paradise and Hell. There, the dues of the wronged are settled with good deeds and sins.

The Shaykh says — there, in return for forgiving a person, a palace like a white cloud will be shown, and it will be said: If you forgive, this is yours.

The Shaykh's Answer

Keep the Sirat before your eyes — then the words of backbiting will not leave your mouth.

The haram that the eyes fall upon, the lie, the severing of family ties, the interest, the neglect of salah — the Shaykh says each one waits on the Sirat as a hook. And dhikr and gratitude make a person light and let them cross quickly.

Evidence — What Gratitude Increases

And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'" (Surah Ibrahim 14:7 — Saheeh International)

The Prophet ﷺ said — The mufarridun have gone ahead. The Companions asked, who are the mufarridun? He said — those who remember Allah often. (Sahih Muslim)

What to Do

  1. Choose one sin today — give it up, and repent.
  2. Those whose rights you have violated, settle with them in this world or ask for their forgiveness.
  3. If there is a quarrel, be the first to give salam — the Shaykh says, that person is the better one.
  4. Whether walking about, lying down or getting up, keep your tongue busy with dhikr.
