The Scale on Which Your Deeds Will Be Weighed

Shaykh Bali says — three things will be placed on the Mizan: the deed, the record of deeds, and the person himself. All three will be weighed.

Shaykh Bali says — three things will be placed on the Mizan: the deed, the record of deeds, and the person himself. All three will be weighed.

How the Scene Unfolds

After the long standing of the Day of Gathering, the reckoning begins — first the presentation, then the records of deeds flying to their owners, then the accounting. It is then that the Mizan is set up.

The scale has two pans — one for good deeds, the other for sins. Each person will be called by name to see his own scale.

The Shaykh says — even if a good deed the size of a mustard seed weighs heavy, by Allah's grace that person will be saved; and if the sins weigh heavy, Allah's mercy alone is the hope.

Even a big, heavyset man will not weigh as much as the wing of a mosquito with Allah on that day — if his inside is empty.

The Shaykh's Answer

Almost all the things that make the scale heavy are works of the tongue and the heart — not of money.

The Shaykh mentioned a few: Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi and Subhanallahil 'Azim; good character, which is the heaviest thing in the servant's Mizan; and “Alhamdulillah” coming from the heart, which fills the scale.

The Evidence — Light on the Tongue, Heavy on the Scale

Two phrases are light on the tongue, heavy on the Mizan, and most beloved to the Most Merciful — Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi, Subhanallahil 'Azim. (Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)

Allah has said that on the Day of Resurrection He will set up the scales of justice; even a deed the size of a mustard seed will be brought forth (Surah Al-Anbiya, verse 47).

What to Do

  1. Fill the empty moments of your day with Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi.
  2. Make your character beautiful — in the Shaykh's words, there is nothing heavier than this in the Mizan.
  3. Even in moments of hardship, say Alhamdulillah from the heart, not as a memorized phrase.
  4. Do not consider a small good deed small — even a mustard seed will be placed on the scale.
