In the Grave, the Deeds Stand Around the Person
Shaykh Bali cites the narration of Ibn Hibban — prayer at the head, fasting on the right, zakat on the left, and helping people at the feet.

Shaykh Bali cites the narration of Ibn Hibban — prayer at the head, fasting on the right, zakat on the left, and helping people at the feet.
How the Scene Unfolds
People turn back from the grave, and the deceased hears the sound of their sandals. Right then the punishment tries to enter — but his deeds stand around him.
If it comes from the direction of the head, the prayer says — there is no way in from this side. If it comes from the right, the fasting says so; from the left, the zakat; and if it comes from the direction of the feet, kindness to people and good deeds say so.
Then he is told — sit up. He sits up; he sees the sun about to set.
The angels ask, what do you say about the man who was sent among you? He says — Leave me for a moment, let me pray the prayer.
The Shaykh's Reply
Even in the grave, his first thought is prayer — because in this world he never missed a prayer time.
The Shaykh says that prayer is placed at the head of the believer because his mind, his head and his thoughts are all tied to the prayer times. And for those who are heedless of prayer, a severe warning has come in the Qur'an. (Surah Al-Ma'un, verses 4–5)
The Prophet ﷺ did not delay the prayer from its time even on the battlefield — it was prayed with the soldiers divided into two groups. So is it fitting to delay it for business or a job?
The Evidence — Deeds Are the Shield
If he is a believer, the prayer is at his head, the fasting at his right side, and the zakat at his left side. (Sahih Ibn Hibban — with a sound chain)
And for the one with no deeds, nothing is found from any direction — he did not pray, did not fast, did not give zakat, and did no good deeds either. Then no one is at his side.
What to Do
- Pray the prayer on time — work, business or tiredness is no excuse.
- Calculate and pay your fasting and zakat obligations carefully — these are what stand on both sides in the grave.
- Hurry to help people — sadaqah, fulfilling needs, giving assistance.
- This world is for a short time — spend this time in obedience.
